Beginner roadmap

Start here: machine embroidery, in the right order.

Most beginner frustration comes from doing things out of order: buying before measuring, stitching before hooping properly, or blaming the machine for a stabilizer problem. Follow these twelve steps.

Phase 1

Before you buy

  1. Learn the one spec that matters most

The embroidery field decides the largest single design you can stitch.

  2. Decide: embroidery-only or combo?

Already sew? An embroidery-only machine may be the better buy.

  3. Make a shortlist

Use the finder, then compare specs side by side.

  4. Budget for more than the machine

Supplies, designs and test fabric add up.

Phase 2

Your first week

  1. Buy the essential supplies

Stabilizer, 40 wt thread, bobbin thread, embroidery needles.

  2. Learn to hoop properly

Most first-project problems start with hooping.

  3. Stitch a built-in design on woven cotton

Stable fabric and tear-away stabilizer make the easiest first project.

  4. Understand stabilizer

Cut-away for stretch, tear-away for stable wovens.

Phase 3

Your first month

  1. Load your own designs

File formats, unzipping and transfer, without the frustration.

  2. Try a T-shirt or towel

Knits and terry each need a specific stabilizer approach.

  3. Fix the common problems

Thread nests, breaks and puckering, and what causes them.

  4. Explore projects

    Appliqué, in-the-hoop projects and more.
